DW and EBU present co-creating vera.ai fact-checking tools for and with media professionals in EBU webinar series no. 8

On 3 September 2025, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) hosted the 8th edition of the webinar series in which selected vera.ai works and outcomes are presented.

During this second to last EBU webinar on the project, Anna Schild (DW) and Lalya Gaye (EBU) discussed their work in involving stakeholders in the co-creation and evaluation of AI-based fact-checking tools within the project.

The vera.ai project set off in 2022 to build trustworthy AI solutions against advanced disinformation techniques which would be co-created with and for media professionals. Three years later and with the project soon approaching its end (formally on 14 Sep, with a final wrap-up period until 31 October 2025), this session looked back on how the project iteratively worked together with verification professionals, fact-checkers and media researchers, using a participatory methodology.

The webinar presented some key takeaways for designing AI-based fact-checking services as drawn from the project by outlining the process of determining user needs through a series of participatory design sessions with media professionals, of guiding technical development based on the resulting requirements, and of evaluating the evolving tools together with end-users.

Below, you can view a recording of the entire talk.

Upcoming webinar no. 9, the last of the series on 9 September
