Double Kick-Off for vera.ai

15th of September 2022 was not only the official start of the vera.ai project, but also the kick-off for presenting it to interested stakeholders. In the course of a virtual Disinfo Workshop, organized by the EU’s Joint Research Centre, Kalina Bontcheva gave an introductory presentation about vera.ai – the first of its kind. Participants interested in disinformation mainly came from the EC, included other policy makers, were members of the JRC research team, came from academia, NGOs and companies such as NewsGuard.

During the presentation, participants learned about the 14 partners involved in the vera.ai project, its underlying ideas and what the project aims for. In this regard, Prof. Bontcheva highlighted the technological objectives of vera.ai, namely developing trustworthy AI methods for multilingual and multimodal content analysis, multimodal AI tools for detecting deepfakes, synthetic or manipulated content, analyzing disinformation narratives and campaigns and measuring their impact, and plans on developing an intelligent verification and debunk authoring assistant.

Besides presenter Kalina Bontcheva, the scientific director of the vera.ai project and Head of Natural Language Processing Group at the University of Sheffield, Denis Teyssou took part in the workshop. He is vera.ai’s Innovation Manager and Editorial Manager at the Medialab of Agence France-Presse (AFP). His impression on vera.ai’s presentation kick-off:
